In 1971 a man named Daniel Ellsburg gave The New York Times top secret information about the Vietnam War, called the pentagon papers. These papers revealed the secrets that the Nixon administration kept secret from the nation.
After the papers were published the government took it to court. This case would be known as The New York Times vs. United States supreme court case.
Because of these papers the supreme court case protected our first amendment (the freedom of press), revealed the corruption in government, and ended helped put an end to the Veitnam War, which saved thousands of lives.
Censorship in Germany
Censorship was rampant throughout Nazi Germany. Censorship ensured that Germans could only see what the Nazi hierachy wanted people to see, hear what they wanted them to hear and read what the Nazi's deemed acceptable.
The prime mover in censorship was the minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. It was his responisibility to see that the German's were fed with material acceptable to the Nazi state.

Some of the worst examples of rigid press censorship induced by military dictators in the 20th century were those of Spain (Spanish Civil War 1930-39), Greece 1967-1978, Chile 1973-1990 and Nigeria 1966-1999.
